Knowing your BMR is really important because it is the amount of calories your body absolutely needs. Any less and you risk putting your body into starvation mode. Starvation mode occurs when your body does not have enough calories. Simply put, since your body requires time and energy to burn fat when it is starving it will do whatever it can to survive- this means it will use muscle tissue instead of fat tissue for energy because muscle is a faster source of energy. Beyond that, starvation mode is a serious health risk and not something to take lightly.
